MotorPunk’s Albert Ball Memorial Blat – A Morgan 3 Wheeler Road Trip

This past summer,  MotorPunk organised a fitting tribute to WWI fighter ace and Morgan fanatic, Captain Albert Ball, with a 13 car fly-past on the 99th anniversary of his tragic death. Whilst lacking the creature comfort of a traditional Grand Tourer, the Morgan Three Wheeler is a marvelous machine to look at, and an absolute hoot to drive. You just have to pack light! MotorPunk on Captain Albert Ball … On May 7th, 1917, Captain Albert Ball met his end following a dogfight with Lothar von Richthofen, brother of the famous Red Baron. An unlikely hero, Captain Ball was a modest man from Nottingham who rose to become one of Britain’s finest fighter aces. He was also one of the very first customers for Morgan’s Three Wheeler, a car he described as being “the closest thing to flying, without leaving […]

Winner – Show Us Your Sticker Contest

Just a quick post to announce the lucky winner of our Show Us You Sticker contest. And the winner is … John Huber of Maryland!  As you will remember, the prize for this contest was a Meguiar’s Complete Car Care Kit. This should serve to get your ride shining for those Fall shows. I have used most, if not all, of the products in this kit and can personally attest to the quality. Though from the picture he sent, it looks like John’s B is already quite the shiner. In addition to that fine Just British Online Motoring Magazine sticker, check out the other bumper sticker. Love it! And even better than that, well to me anyway, check out that license plate. Must admit that I am quite jealous of that one. Honestly, I love getting these pictures and hearing the […]

World-renowned vintage Bentley specialist William Medcalf is proud to be the subject of one of the latest films to be released by celebrated film-maker and car magazine Petrolicious. The evocative film perfectly captures the spirit of William Medcalf and gives an insight into what drives his passion for vintage Bentleys while entertaining the viewer with fantastic cinematography that shows exactly how these cars are best used. The 10-minute piece was filmed in the beautiful Sussex countryside, in the areas surrounding William Medcalf’s workshop and headquarters in Liss. This area not only provides the perfect driving roads but also shows England at its very best. William tells the story behind his life-long passion for vintage Bentleys, and how he feels the cars should be driven today. “Anything with wheels should be raced. Everything with wheels should be driven to the limit,” […]

Left Beyond the Horizon – A Land Rover Odyssey

Charting the amazing story of Christopher Many’s 125,000-mile, eight-and-a-half-year adventure, Left Beyond the Horizon chronicles his inspirational journey around the world in his trusty 1975 Series III Land Rover, Matilda. Between 2002 and 2010, Christopher’s unforgettable exploration off the beaten track took him from the Scottish Highlands, through Scandinavia and the frozen wastelands of Siberia, and then across Asia. That was before traversing the Pacific Ocean to North and South America, then over the Atlantic, allowing him to drive through Africa and back up to Europe – all to find out what makes the Earth ‘tick’. In the year that saw the wheels stop turning on the iconic Land Rover Defender’s production line, the unshakable robustness and durability of Matilda is a fitting tribute to the much-loved British vehicle. No stranger to tough expeditions herself, Matilda started life being thrown […]

An Estate Car Named Desire: A Life on the Road by Martin Gurdon

An Estate Car Named Desire: A Life on the Road by Martin Gurdon, is a delightful collection of short memories of various cars and motoring folk. Or at least that is how the publisher describes it. I would say it is an amusing trip in a series of cars all connected by personality. The personality of the owners, the drivers, the passengers, and of course, the cars themselves. The personality of one of those cars was strong enough to be used in a video on “How to Irritate People”. Even as a toddler, Martin Gurdon was obsessed with cars. Before he could read or write he could distinguish a vehicle passing in the street from the purr of its engine. His first car – not strictly legally – was as a fifteen-year-old, parked round the corner from his boarding school, and driven […]

British Leyland Motor Corporation – The Story From Inside

The history of the British car industry is a fascinating one. From Britain’s the top-of-the-heap position through the 1960s down to a mere footnote by the 1990s, the rise and fall has been analyzed to death. But, most of that analyzation has been from the outside. Only recently have those actually involved in the industry begun to come forward and tell their tales. British Leyland Motor Corporation 1968 – 2005 The Story From Inside by Mike Carver, Nick Seale and  Anne Youngson is just such an insider story. This book tells the story of the constituent parts of British Leyland, later Rover Group, from the merger in 1968 to the end of production of the last MG Rover in 2005. The story has been told before, but this account is different. It is told by three people who were part of it, […]

TR Drivers Club Inaugural Bullet Run Event Recap

The TR Drivers Club hosted the Bullet Run on the weekend of 17th to 19th June to commemorate the passing of Standard-Triumph’s Chief Development Engineer, Tony Lee, who sadly died in September last year.  The famous TR7 prototype photos with Tony at Bwlch y Groes in Wales were the inspiration for this event and although these are the only known photos of Triumph development vehicles at the location it was a test route used regularly by management and senior staff.  Known at the Canley factory as “Ride & Drive” it was a fairly thorough test with up to 300 miles along varied roads that culminated at the scenic Bwlch y Groes location.  The TR Drivers Club organizers sought to reproduce the “Ride & Drive” route and invited owners of all Triumph models to take part.     The host hotel […]

Celebrate British Car Week!

OK, so I am a day or two late, but … let’s get on with it.  This is British Car Week!! Get out there and drive those cars and let the world know we are still on the road. I will just quote from Scott Helms here to tell you about British Car Week. Scott has the “official” British Car Week site, and is the keeper of this flame, so here goes … The idea came about during the early spring of 1997 after reading an article written by Road & Track columnist, Peter Egan (Side Glances), in the March, 1997 issue of Road & Track Magazine, titled “Seldom seen cars.” Peter writes in his article about his trip to the Dentist’s office, which spawned a conversation about cars. While sitting in the Dentist chair with his mouth full of […]

Classic Motorshow to Feature Heroes and Heroines

The organisers of the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show have revealed that this year’s show theme is Heroes and Heroines. Held from Friday 11th to Sunday 13th November, clubs and exhibitors are invited to pay tribute to the people and motors that are their inspiration. Dan Nwaokolo, Show Director, explains: “Everyone has a hero, something or somebody that inspires and encourages them, and with the timing of this year’s show, being Remembrance weekend, we simply had to recognise the brave men and women who have served their country, so this theme was the perfect choice.” The 250 exhibiting clubs are encouraged to get creative with their displays and to interpret the theme in their own unique way.
