Burlen Celebrates SU Carburetor Cup at Mini Festival

Burlen Ltd, the world’s only manufacturer of genuine SU (Skinner’s Union), AMAL and Zenith carburetors, is celebrating a hugely successful promotion of the flagship race of the 2017 Brands Hatch Mini Festival.

Earlier in July, the Salisbury-based company promoted the Historic Mini Races – named ‘The SU Carburetters Cup for Pre-66 Minis’ – and pulled out all the stops to create an event that will live long in the memory.

The annual Brands Hatch Mini Festival celebrates one of the greatest creations in British automotive history – and nothing is more looked forward to than when the historic Minis do battle. Minis have played a substantial role in the success of the SU Carburetter and the classic Brit currently represents around 15-20% of Burlen’s yearly SU Carburetter and spares sales.

Burlen welcomed 17 cars to the event, including a team of three from France and an extra-special racer from Sweden. Flat-Out-Frank Edwinsson was taking part in his first-ever UK race at the iconic Kent track, coming over to make his Britain debut at the age of 70.

All drivers were treated to a welcome pack courtesy of Burlen upon arrival, which included custom-made SU Clothing Company Flat Caps. The caps proved hugely popular over the weekend and Burlen now has plans to offer them for sale to the public at the upcoming Goodwood Revival.

Burlen split this year’s Pre-66 race into three separate 15-minute legs, adding up to a 45-minute competition for the teams to tackle and fight for the coveted trophies. Said trophies caused quite a stir and upped the competition when they were first unveiled, too, as Burlen adopted a stylish global theme with an SU carburetor replacing the world atop the prize.

As well as treating teams and spectators to a fantastic festival of Mini action, Burlen also did its bit for charity by supporting The Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. Its JustGiving page has raised nearly £8,000 for a cause close to the company’s heart, and it’s continuing to welcome donations. Those who witnessed the racing first hand took part or supported someone doing so can donate to this worthy cause by visiting https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/sucarbscup

Mark Burnett, Managing Director of Burlen, said:

We are absolutely delighted with just how perfect The SU Caburetters Cup for Pre-66 Minis at the Brands Hatch Mini Festival was. We gave the teams, drivers and fans something to savour, and they all responded perfectly by laying on a true spectacle. Minis are of the utmost importance to Burlen, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s event. Raising so much money for The Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund also means the world to us – this is a charity very close to our hearts and we’re overwhelmed with the support so far. We can’t wait to get stuck in to next year’s Brands Hatch Mini Festival and serve up another fantastic day.
