Fifty years after James Hunt secured the 1976 Formula 1 World Championship, a number of very special lots celebrating his life lead Broad Arrow Auctions‘ Global Icons: Winter Memorabilia and Artwork online sale. The auction opens for bidding on Monday, November 9 and runs through November 23, with more than 300 lots of rare motorsport memorabilia and artwork.

British Formula One driver Hunt competed from 1973 to 1979 and won the 1976 World Championship with McLaren, taking 10 Grand Prix victories during his career. Known for his charismatic personality and aggressive driving style, he became one of Formula One’s most recognisable figures before retiring in 1979. October 24 marked 50 years since Hunt finished third at a wet Fuji Speedway in the 1976 Japanese Grand Prix, a result that famously secured him the championship by a single point over rival Niki Lauda.
“Our latest memorabilia sale is packed with lots sure to entice any motorsport enthusiast,” said Matt Coles, Memorabilia Specialist for Broad Arrow Auctions. “We are delighted to offer some very special pieces of James Hunt history on the anniversary of his spectacular 1976 Championship win. There are many heroes of motorsport, but Hunt is one of the most recognised and loved characters of the sport, from an era of the like we will never see again.”
The headline Hunt lot is the 2012 Kimi Räikkönen James Hunt Lotus tribute helmet, estimated at €8,000 to €10,000 and offered without reserve directly from the Hunt family. The Arai GP-6 helmet is finished in the tribute livery worn by Räikkönen at the 2012 Monaco Grand Prix while driving for Lotus, a design created with the support of the Hunt family. This example was later used by Freddie Hunt at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and retains its Goodwood 2016 and MSA scrutineering stickers, and it comes with a personal note from Tom Hunt.
Also offered by the Hunt family is a 1976 German Grand Prix drawing of Hunt, estimated at €2,500 to €4,000 without reserve. The piece carries 21 original signatures from an extraordinary gathering of Grand Prix drivers, including Hunt, Niki Lauda, Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, Ronnie Peterson, Jody Scheckter, John Watson and Alan Jones, a remarkable snapshot of Formula One’s golden era.

Three original trophies from Hunt’s 1968 Formula Ford season, estimated at €6,000 to €8,000 without reserve, offer a glimpse into the formative years of his career, while a more accessible option comes in the form of a 1976 James Hunt McLaren framed print by Michael Thompson, part of a limited run of 750 and framed with an original Hunt autograph, estimated at €1,000 to €1,200.
The Global Icons: Winter Memorabilia and Artwork online auction runs from November 9 to 23. The full catalogue is available from Broad Arrow Auctions.
