Bentley Crewe at 80: From the First Mark VI to the Dream Factory

Bentley is celebrating 80 years of car production at Crewe this year, and the anniversary has turned into a summer-long reunion of the marque’s past and present, centered on the car that started it all: the Mark VI.

The Pyms Lane factory was built in 1938 to produce Rolls-Royce Merlin aero engines. It became a car plant in 1946, and the first vehicle to roll off its line was a Bentley Mark VI. Eight decades later, Crewe remains the home of Bentley, where every model is designed, developed, engineered and handcrafted.

The Mark VI: Crewe’s first Bentley

Buyers in 1946 could order the Mark VI with J.P. Blatchley’s standard steel body or as a rolling chassis for the independent coachbuilders of the day. Power came from a 4,257cc B60 six-cylinder engine, and the car earned a reputation for covering more than 100,000 miles without major overhaul.

In an era of austerity, its understated elegance found a ready audience. By the end of production in 1951, Bentley had built 4,001 Mark VIs, of which 3,171 carried the standard steel body, making it the marque’s most successful model of its era.

Bentley’s Heritage Collection holds a two-tone green and black example that is one of 241 coachbuilt four-door, six-light saloons bodied by H.J. Mulliner, then still an independent coachbuilder. Delivered in January 1950 to first owner William Lount, it joined the collection in 2021.

A summer of anniversary gatherings

In late July, 107 Bentleys owned by members of the Bentley Drivers Club returned to Crewe and lined Pyms Lane in chronological order of production. The display began with EXP3, the first Bentley ever delivered to a customer, and ran through the Blowers and the Derby years to a 2025 Flying Spur Speed. The club was marking its own 90th anniversary at the same time.

On August 29, the RREC, the International Club for Rolls-Royce and Bentley Enthusiasts, celebrated the milestone at the British Motor Museum, with member cars spanning Crewe-built heritage from the 1946 Mark VI to the newest Continental GT.

Two Mulliner tributes

Mulliner created a unique Continental GT Azure in homage to the Heritage Collection Mark VI. Finished in solid Barnato Green with a contrasting Mulliner Black roof, it echoes the old car’s two-tone scheme, while the cabin pairs Cricket Ball red hide with Beluga secondary hide and a dark stained burr walnut veneer. Its treadplates carry outlines of the Mark VI and Continental GT, inscribed “Celebrating the 80th Anniversary of production in Crewe, 1946-2026.”

A one-off Continental GTC marked the July gathering in an exclusive Supernova Purple Ombre finish developed by Bentley’s Paint Shop and bespoke teams, with an “80” side graphic, embroidered anniversary headrests and an airbrushed fascia depicting the Design Studio.

From Merlin engines to the Dream Factory

“For 80 years, it is the extraordinary people of Crewe who have defined Bentley’s success,” said Andreas Lehe, Bentley’s Member of the Board for Manufacturing, at the July celebration.

The campus is nearing the end of its most significant transformation yet into what Bentley calls its next-generation Dream Factory, adding a Design Studio, Engineering Technical Centre, Excellence Centre for Quality and Launch, Integrated Logistics Centre and a Paint Shop that was officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal in July. The oldest building on site is now being converted for assembly of the marque’s first electric car, pairing new manufacturing technology with the handcraftsmanship that has defined Crewe for 80 years.
