This film, titled “The Magic Midget” was produced by British Leyland to celebrate the racing pedigree of the MG and possibly transfer some of that aura of speed and success to the more modern incarnation of the MG Midget. From its earliest days MGs have been used in competition and from the early 1930s a series of dedicated racing cars such as the 1931 C-Type and 1934 Q-type were made and sold to enthusiasts who received considerable company assistance. A nearly new MG Midget that has never even been registered is set to go under the hammer this month. With just 162 miles under its wheels, this 1980 Midget’s odometer actually reads 19 after the original faulty instrument cluster was replaced at its first service, which took place 11 months after the car was bought. The car has never changed hands and the current seller bought it new after hearing about the imminent demise of MG. He intended to give it to one of his children after they passed their driving test, but for unknown reasons never did. Anglia Car Auctions (ACA) will carry out the sale on Saturday June 14. Yes, unfortunately, due to other projects and constraints I need to sell the MG Midget I bought to restore. Needless to say the hardtop sold quickly, but the rest of the car is still available. I just realized that I never published any story on the front page of JustBritish about my current projects. There are links to them over there on the right, but you may never have scanned down. Anyway, I am currently restoring a 1973 MG Midget and behind that waits a 1962 Triumph TR4. Both are pretty far gone and will take a good bit of work, although I personally believe they are not as bad as they look. My wife seems to differ with that opinion – as is normal. My goal, whatever that is worth, is to have the Midget on the road before year’s end. It may not be perfect, but I would like to be able to drive it.
