Officially, the world record will be 144 cars – as two MGs were discounted from the attempt as they were over the maximum distance of two car lengths between vehicles. The record was set on 11 April and was organised by Lancaster Insurance and the MG Owners’ Club.

Lancaster’s managing director Richard Morley, who helped lead the parade in a race-prepared MGF said: ‘We’re so thrilled with how it went. When we first got to the track it was raining and miserable, but luckily the sun came out and so did the cars.’

Martin Wills, who drove a race-prepared MG ZR, added: ‘I thought it’d be quite naff but it’s turned out utterly brilliant. Seeing all the MGs snaked around the Rockingham oval was brilliant.’

Lancaster Insurance and MG Owners Club set World RecordDrivers slammed on their accelerators and took off as the green flag was waved. Successfully complying with official guidelines, 144 MG cars drove around the oval circuit while maintaining a distance of two vehicle-lengths apart from each other during the entire parade. A Guinness World Records adjudicator oversaw the high-octane achievement and confirmed the new record achievement for the 144 MG motoring enthusiast participants and Lancaster Insurance on the day.

Sam Mason, official adjudicator for Guinness World Records, said: ‘This is the first record attempt of its kind, meaning there only needed to be more than 100 cars, all driving within two car lengths of each other. There were 146 at Rockingham but we had to discount two because they weren’t close enough, so the official record now stands at 144.’
