Connecticut MG Club

February 14 @ 3:35 am

CT Connecticut MG Club

The Connecticut MG Club was started in 1987 by a small group of British car enthusiasts. They met regularly at Reilly’s Restuarant in New Haven to talk about their common interest, the MG.

Through word of mouth, nerve and lots of chutzpah, this small group managed to get together enough interest to hold their own event, “Cars at the Castle,” at Gillette Castle in 1988. About 30 cars attended and, by the end of that year, the membership had grown to 56.

Meeting on the first Tuesday of every month, the group continued to expand, picking up members from throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. By June of 1989, at their second “Cars at the Castle,” membership had skyrocketed to over 100 members. By their third event, the membership was close to 215 and growing! Soon the group of MG enthusiasts had outgrown Reilly’s and had taken monthly residence at Britannia Spoon Co. Restaurant in Yalesville, CT.

The annual car show had become an eagerly awaited event, and the Connecticut MG Club had become a respected force in the British car community. The club lent a helping hand to the Connecticut Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in their first ever car show “British MaDDness” in 1990.

By 1995, the annual car show had outgrown the field at Gillette Castle. It moved to Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford. CT and was renamed “British Cars by the Sea.” Held every June this show has become one of the largest gatherings of British cars in Southern New England!

The club still meets on the first Tuesday on every month, but they have moved to Farrell’s on Rt 66 in Portland Ct. The group now numbers around 280.

In addition to general membership meetings, the club offers a monthly newsletter, regular “regional gatherings,” various parties, picnics, and technical sessions. The Connecticut MG Club welcomes all MGs – all types, all conditions – and also British “cousins” like Triumph and Austin Healey!
